I'm 99% sure that Sam has conjunctivitis. I decided to get a head start on treating it and just attempted to put the ointment in his eyes. Yeah, right.
He closed his eyes so tightly that I'm not sure if any if it actually got on his eye ball. Is there a trick to doing this? Is it enough to smear it all over their eyelid (meaning, will some of it work it's way into the eye?) I'm planning to do it again when he falls asleep but any suggestions on getting it in during the day would be oh so appreciated...

Put the ointment on your index finger of your dominant hand. Grab child's head in a vise grip with your other and and arm to prevent twisting. Use your dominant hand thumb to pull down the lower lid and scrape the ointment onto the inside of the lid and let him blink away. It will distribute itself inside the eye socket (gross! I can't belive I just typed eye socket)
Debby's advice sounds great. Unfortunately, I think she is right that you just have to hold him tightly to get it in there.
I had to do drops, though and they burned so much. I hope the ointment doesn't burn like those did.
Best of luck to you and I hope Sam feels better soon. Poor guy.
Bribery always works for me:)
Show him on yourself what you plan to do. Have him watch TV while you do so he doesn't see you coming at him. Pull down the lower lid and put it on like eye liner, but above the lashes.
That's what I'd try.
Poor Sam!! We had the drops, but I feel his pain. I got it from Gwen four times in the course of a month. So painful!
I have not had to give them to abby, but I had it and had to dose myself
strangely enough, afterward I often got a weird unpleasant taste in my mouth as if it were dripping down (not sure if that is possible, but I thought it was worth mentioning)
